Spicy Masala Tofu Pizza

It’s National Pizza Day and what better way to celebrate than by making Pakistani masala vegan pizza! Sorry, Italians, but I had to make my own desi version!

This one packs a bit of a spicy punch with the spicy masala sauce that is both the pizza sauce and also the marinade for the tofu! We made things alittle easier by buying vegan pizza dough from a local pizzeria. But here is a good vegan pizza dough recipe if you’re so inclined to make it!

Please let me know if you end up trying this or making the masala sauce! Would love to see others celebrating National Pizza Day in their own unique ways!

Ingredients

  • 1 premade pizza dough (or make your own)

  • 1 block of extra firm tofu (pressed to remove excess water)

  • 1 pack non-dairy cheese (we used Whole Foods plant-based mozzarella)

  • canned or fresh tomatoes (6 or 7 fresh roma, or 1 28 oz can)

  • 1/4 cup tomato paste

  • 2 tsp cumin seeds

  • 1.5 tsp mustard seeds

  • 1 jalapeno (or green chili)

  • 1 tsp red chili flakes

  • 1.5 tsp salt

  • 1 tsp garam masala

  • 1/2 tsp turmeric

  • 1.5 tsp tamarind paste

  • 1 tbsp organic sugar

  • 2 tsp fresh garlic or garlic paste

  • 1 tsp ginger paste or fresh

  • 1 chopped onion

  • Pizza toppings

  • 1 sliced onion (rings style)

  • 1/2 red bell pepper and 1/2 orange bell pepper (thinly sliced lengthwise)

Directions

  • Masa Pizza Sauce and Tofu Marinade: First preheat oven or air fryer to 375F. To make masala sauce, first add cumin and mustard seeds and roast them for a couple minutes on medium heat. Next, add tomatoes, spices, sugar, jalapeños (or green chili), garlic, tamarind paste, ginger, and tomato paste. Make sure you’re mixing ingredients throughout. Add 1 chopped onion. Cook down until the onion is tender. Then add mixture to your food processor (I use a Vitamix). After fully pureed, your masala sauce is ready!
  • Next you can use this to coat your tofu and marinate. Place cubed tofu in a bowl and place 1/4 cup of masala sauce and make sure all tofu is thoroughly coated. Set aside to marinate for 30-40 minutes. When ready, place tofu in preheated oven or air fryer and bake for 15 minutes at 375F.
  • Now let’s assemble our pizza! Take your pizza dough and stretch out to pizza tray size. Add first layer of masala pizza sauce, add nondairy cheese, add baked or air fried masala tofu, add any other toppings, and pop it into the oven! We have an Ooni pizza oven that we love that cooks the pizza in 4 minutes, but since most people don’t have one, you can place into a regular oven for 10 minutes at 450F degrees. Now ovens can be different in temperature and preferences in crispiness of pizza vary, so I would check every 5 minutes to ensure your desired texture is delivered.
